Experience

March 2000 to present

Alcatel, Washington, DC

Field Service Engineer

Providing on-site support to Alcatel’s customers for voice and data network equipment. Working with new clients and new networks every week.  Support includes network engineering, installation and support, including VoIP telephony installations.  Position requires flexibility, ability to analyze and identify solutions quickly, ensure customer satisfaction, and be the company’s “face” to the client.

Resident Field Engineer at the Pentagon.  Supported operational networks of the Air Force, Army, and Office of Secretary of Defense.  Participated in architectural review of engineering design for the Pentagon renovation.  This included both high-level review and detailed engineering design of the Renovated Pentagon architecture.  Part of a team that installed equipment to provide network connectivity to meet ever-changing new requirements.

Provided top-level support and troubleshooting of network outages.  Called in for major network outages or when systems critical to national defense were down.  Was the “go-to” person when other avenues for resolution were exhausted.

Relocated more than 5,000 Pentagon users to new facilities after they were displaced on 9/11.  In less than one week, the team provided full network connectivity back to the Pentagon from three new locations for both Classified and Unclassified systems for all users.

November 1995 to February 2000

SMS Data Products Group, Sterling, VA

Network Systems Engineer

Participated in the design and installation of the internetwork for the renovated Pentagon and the  “Swing Space” required by the relocation for 20,000+ users.  The network consisted of a core of Cisco and Fore Systems ATM switches using multi-level, hierarchical PNNI and IISP.  Users were attached via Alcatel and Cisco ethernet switches as LANE proxies.

Configured Cisco routers using policy-based routing to support multiple routing protocols (OSPF, RIP) in separate Autonomous Systems without violating AS integrity.  Performed on-the-spot problem-solving and implemented solutions during network outages. Installed networks and verified operation for short time-line tenant moves.

Designed and installed an upgraded routing solution for the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Policy.  The network used Cisco's Hot Standby Router Protocol to provide redundancy across multiple router modules installed in a Catalyst 5500 chassis.  The routers also provided DHCP forwarding to permit clients to request addresses from servers on different networks, permitting the discontinuation the bridging between networks used previously.  The Catalyst switches provided transparent bridging between FDDI and Ethernet devices on the same network using differing frame types.

March 1995 to September 1995

Ogden Communications Inc., Reston, VA

Systems Engineer

Installed and maintained in-house 75 node NetWare 4 LAN, comprised of an FDDI backbone and switching.  Installed and trouble-shot customer networks.  Part of a team developing a desktop video system using TCP/IP signaling.  Connected local network to corporate backbone using routers and bridges via 56k leased digital telephone line.  Helped set up leased connection to Internet service provider.  Implemented TCP/IP on local clients for Internet and Web access.

June 1994 to March 1995

A-1 Cabling and Consulting Services Inc., Alexandria, VA

Systems Engineer

Installed, maintained, and trouble-shot networks and computers for multiple clients in the Washington area.  Installed NetWare, LANtastic, OS/2, Windows, PCs, Macintoshes, workstations, file servers, communication servers, and database servers in 5 to 100+ node environments.  Assisted in cable-plant and installation.  Maintained dial-up Internet connection.

June 1991 to June 1994

RMS Technologies Inc., Washington, DC

Network Technician

Part of the team re-designing the FAA's data communications network.  The network used leased-line synchronous modems to transport radar data from radars to Air Traffic Control Centers, and between Control Centers.

Installed and maintained Ethernet 10Base-T LAN supporting 75 users on NetWare 3 network.  Maintained local cc:Mail post office connected to 20,000 user cc:Mail system.
